The Two-Man Tour Experience: A Course Operator and PGA Professional’s Perspective

By Evan Hewes, PGA

After more than 30 years as a PGA professional, I’ve seen just about every format, league, and outing come through a golf course. I’ve managed charity scrambles, club championships, and corporate events—but when the Two-Man Tour came to Wisconsin in 2022, something felt different right away.

As both a golf professional and course operator, I’m always asking: Is this good for the game? The Two-Man Tour answers that question with a resounding yes. It embodies what makes golf special—competition, camaraderie, and community—and it does it in a way that connects players across ages and skill levels.

Why the Two-Man Tour Works

Golf is, at its heart, about who you play with. That’s what this tour gets right

The format itself is fantastic. Whether it’s a shamble, scramble, the Two-Man structure levels the playing field.  No handicap is required, flights are set after round one. You’ve got 2-person teams shooting in the low sixties to others in the 80’s. It’s competition for everyone—from 20-year-olds to 70-year-olds. Some are low-handicap players chasing a number; others just want to test themselves and share the fun with a buddy.  Based on the successful format, I see 90% of the field will have a chance to win money going into Sunday’s final round.

Good for the Game—and the Business

Even for courses that don’t “need” extra play, this is about more than tee times. It’s about growing the game. Every Two-Man event introduces new players to your facility. Some may become members, some may bring their own groups back, and all of them leave with a great impression of your course and your staff.

For operators, it’s also a smart business model. You can charge what makes sense for your market, and because the format and experience are turnkey, it doesn’t add stress to your operation. You’ll gain exposure, revenue, and goodwill all in one weekend.

Hosting the Two-Man Tour is as easy as it gets. Everything’s organized. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel. You just host, manage your course, and watch players have an incredible experience.

The Right Kind of Clientele

In all the events I’ve hosted, the Two-Man Tour has attracted the kind of golfers any operator would want—respectful, appreciative, and loyal. They show up ready to play, treat the facility well, and bring a great attitude. We’ve even had ladies competing, including several who’ve become repeat participants and won prize money along the way.

As a PGA professional, I couldn’t ask for a better group to represent the spirit of the game.

The Bottom Line

I’ve said it before: our job as PGA professionals is to support what’s good for the game. The Two-Man Tour does exactly that. It blends everything golf stands for—ethics, integrity, camaraderie, competition, and connection.

For me, that’s what it’s all about: great golf, great people, and an experience that represents everything the PGA of America stands for.
